1888 Indian Head cent
Main Post:
Im very new to coin collecting and I'm consumed by it . I got this yesterday and I know it's not possible but does that date look like 1838... Instead of 1888?? Thanks for any input!

You're right, it's not possible. They didn't make Indian Head Cents in 1838.
What if Grover Cleveland won in 1888? How would he be seen now? Would this avoid a McKinley and Roosevelt presidency?

Can't give the Entente all the love, today we hop over to the Central Powers with the Model of 1888 Commission Rifle, aka the Gew 88. Originally made in 1891 at the Danzig arsenal, this one has seen a long life: first with the Imperial Germans, then later with the Ottomans and Turks. The matching front barrel band has a crossed out unit mark of 37.R.R.2.134 meaning 37th Reserve Regiment, Company 2, Rifle 134.
Like most you find, she has all the updates: 88/05 for the stripper clip guides and internal magazine, S for the chamber cut and sights, as well as the /15 for the magazine cover plate, even a nm barrel and a Czech made bolt for the Turks. Finding non-updated, and non-Turk examples is becoming more and more difficult, but you just need to know what to look for.
These rifles are still pretty affordable and underrated imo, as they have tons of history and are beautifully made with such smooth actions. Highly recommend picking one or more up. People get scared of these due to the weaker action and the whole bore diameter thing, which both are not really a big issue, just do your research.
GEW 88/14

Picked up this 1891 Danzig Gewehr 1888/14 today from the LGS for $495 OTD. Grabbed some extra 8mm ammo as well, and called it a day.
The rifle itself doesn't have any Ottoman markings, but the rear sight and bolt both have Arabic numerals, and the bolt has crescent markings.
Bore is in fantastic condition. Spitzer ammo chambers nicely with no resistance, and the reciever is cut for Spitzer ammo.
Minor rust on the bayonet lug. I havent dont a full tear down yet, but otherwise it looks good on the surface.

The ‘05 was the original charger guide upgrade. The ‘14 charger guides are very different. Some other differences as well but I’m old and CRS I have an old German ‘table’ that lists the differences between 88, 88S, 88/05 & 88/14, I’ll see if I can’t find and post here.
